So we spent the morning in the Altstadt in Heidelberg…just walking and taking photos as it is very photogenic. We headed back hopefully for our 14.06 train to Stuttgart where we change to the Munich train. No sign of a 1406 on the information boards so we asked the somewhat miserable looking man in the Information point who shook his head at the itinerary (all booked from Brussels to Salzburg with Deutsche Bahn and their suggestion!) and said the 1406 no longer exists so to go back to Mannheim (aaargh! That wasn’t good yesterday) and get the train from there to Munich. It turned out to be the same number train that we should have boarded at Stuttgart…but it was running 9 minutes late. Our change time at Munich was 10 minutes - so that didn’t look good. By the time it was leaving Stuttgart it was 35 minutes late so we would definitely be on a later train to Salzburg. As we neared Munchen, the announcement was for Salzburg passengers to go for the 17.55 on platform 9. That turned out to be in a far away part of the Munchen Hauptbahnhof…but we got there. Naturally as it was a later train than the one we were booked on, we hadn’t got booked seats so we were pleased to find somewhere and luckily found ourselves a very pleasant travelling companion. A retired gentleman from Luneberg travelling to visit his family outside Salzburg. His English and a bit of my German meant we all chatted and passed the time as the train crawled on getting ever later and later until we finally arrived at 8.30 pm (we’d told the hotel 6pm based on the original itinerary…so they were cross too).
To add insult to injury, the WiFi on board the trains was not working and nor is my roaming, so all my plans to catch up while on the train came to naught. At least I now have WiFi in the hotel, but the non-working roaming is a mystery so I’ve had to attempt to get help from O2 who sadly took over from VirginMobile. So far no luck at all.
Keith has something planned for tomorrow but after being sunny and hot today, rain is forecast for most of the day. Still, at least, no long train journeys are on the schedule.
